  Hannibal had a very hard time crossing the Durance River because it, unlike the Isère, arises from springs, not glaciers or snow-fields. It has a minimum flow in the summer, rises with the onset of the autumn rains The river is highest and wildest in the winter.  When Hannibal crossed, it was swollen with rain, which made rafting or swimming much harder.
